ORGANIZE SENIOR MOVES

Flo McDonough

The writer has worked for Organize Senior Moves since 2011 in a variety of capacities. In her “previous life” (before the 7 children), she was a teacher. I have an experiment for you readers:  Tell someone that you would like to help them "declutter" or "downsize" their belongings. The responses will range from outright refusal to a wonderful look of gratitude.  After five years of work with a senior move management company, here are some of the most common responses that encountered:

Myth Busters -- Working with Senior Move Managers

Posted by Flo McDonough on Apr 26, 2017 12:03:18 PM

As an employee of a senior move management company, one of my responsibilities is to help clients transition from one home to another (usually smaller) home.

For seniors this inevitably means that there will be some downsizing, organizing and decluttering necessary before the move takes place.  Our goal is to work closely with the client to determine what they would like to keep and what they would like to leave behind.  Many of our clients find this to be a very challenging/difficult process.  Nearly everything that they have, regardless of its age or condition, is placed in the "keep" pile.  Despite our best efforts, we are not always successful in getting the "keep" pile to a reasonable size.

It is interesting to spend some time talking to our clients.  We have found that clients sometimes have misperceptions about the work that we do.  Below, I hope to clear up some of these misunderstandings.

Spring Cleaning with Seniors

Posted by Flo McDonough on Mar 21, 2017 11:56:04 AM

March 20th.

The first day of spring.

I am not sure exactly how I feel about saying "goodbye" to winter and "hello" to spring.  Don't get me wrong, I love the spring.  As crazy as it sounds, I actually get nervous as spring approaches, feeling the pressure of ensuring that my spring cleaning efforts are aggressive enough to effectively tackle all areas of the home that need to be addressed.  But enough about my ideosyncracies...

No matter your age, you probably do at least a little spring cleaning.  As senior move managers, we frequently encounter clients who are not only willing, but also very able to do their own spring cleaning.  Rather than discourage their efforts we do what we can to make sure that they are not over-extending themselves in the process.  So, how should an elderly person proceed with their spring cleaning?

Aging in Place, the Lifestyle Trend for 2017

Posted by Flo McDonough on Jan 4, 2017 1:52:44 PM

"Aging in place" has become such a common term and lifestyle strategy that there is now a National Aging in Place Council!  The idea of being able to stay in one's home for as long as is feasible is certainly no surprise and is very understandable.  So, just how does one do this in the most efficient, well thought out manner?
